We taught another stool course

A wonderful group of people and a great set of stool
(Dw the tall one is getting stretchers)

We decided the final photo should be commemorated by a horse chestnut being planted on the farm @gotgreensfarm . Be nice to make this a thing for courses going forward.

Me, Alex & @a_stevens_woodworker are hosting a 6 day Windsor chair course in November (link in bio)

@alex.skawinski & I need a name to go by, as the pair of us teaching greenwood stuff. Any ideas?

This has been this biggest project I’ve taken on, and probably the most important.
I’ve been living in this Luton van box for a few years now, I need more space.
Me and my brother got the final wall plate up last night, I feel like that’s most of the difficult bits done.
Feeling very fortunate to have a spot to do this under these oaks.

The next big milestones will be getting the roof joists in & cutting out the side of the van box.

Assembling the scarf.
My second one of these I’ve cut, the first one in round elm was much more difficult and went together way worse.

My only timber framing experience really is @suikoushya, not a timber framing course as such, but helped me develop the skills to maintain and use the tools, understanding the wood and mark the lines. @takamikawai & @dylaniwakuni thank you for your continued sharing of knowledge. I look forward to Takami’s book arriving. And hope to meet up with both of them again

Final trimming and measuring of this scarf joint.
This is the final large component of my timber frame. A long wall plate, out of two pieces of white cedar ( I believe thuja ocidentalis) from @wentwoodtimber.

Manoeuvring these big timbers isn’t easy, and cutting the joints is slow for me. I’m not able to do as much as I would like to in a day.

Scribing in these three shoulders has been very difficult.
Mainly because of how much work it is to move the components.
I’ve got all three pretty good and the posts seem to be square and in the right place.

They will probably be fettled a little more. Then I can move onto the other joinery.

This week I’ve finished the ground work for when the frame is eventually raised. This needed to be done now because I needed to know where the bottom of the posts will sit .

Hard work on the brain and body timber framing, FairPlay to you lot doing this kinda stuff.

ANOTHER CREATIVE STOOL WEEKEND DATE ADDED

Our August course has just one spot left, so we’ve added another on 12th - 13th September.

Thank you those that have booked on or supported @alex.skawinski & I in getting set up to teach. We are getting there!
Looking forward to seeing some of you on the farm soon!

Photographed is a stool (/side table) I made as practice for the course, with only an axe, bit & brace, drawknife and a saw.

Got Greens Farm,
The first image is a view of our 3 fields @gotgreensfarm. About 7.5 acres.
My brother Sam & I were fortunate enough to inherit this land from our grandad, Haydn. In 2020 we decided we would incorporate a CIC with 4 friends and start a community farm of sorts.
Over the last 6 years we have worked out what we really want to do and why we are doing it.
My involvement over those years varied, but now it’s something I’m dedicated more energy to. Something I care deeply about.

We’ve got chickens, bees, a Coppice, a market garden, a stage, an orchard, beautiful hedges with old hazel stools and some big old oaks. We’ve been hosting events, growing food and learning. This is the space @alex.skawinski and I will be hosting our nest greenwood courses, and hopefully many more craftspeople and educators hosting workshops in the future.
It feels some how wrong to own something like this, I know Sam feels the similar. The only way I will feel comfortable is to enable this area of land to impact many people’s lives, the local environment and our selves as patrons of the land. To care for, and share.

I’ve spent most of this year so far here on the farm. I’ve not been doing well in my mental and physical health for a while now. The kindness of those close to me carried me through winter.

Lots of consideration of what is worth my energy of course. Seeing the plants grow in the farm is something I have found joy in. My main focus right now is preparing for winter.

Again; I want this written for my own record, I can find joy.

Thanks you everyone

This chair is 2 years old now.

I’ll get back to making chairs at some point I hope.

Not something I have the capacity to do right now.

To mulch young trees

About 18 months after felling these elms, I am finally doing some joinery to make an extension for my house.
Getting this constructed for winter & looking after the farm is all I can focus on right now. Working with these big timbers is really challenging and very slow.
I hope I’ll enjoy it when it’s done. For now it feel like it just needs doing

I shot this video in maybe August.
Since then I’ve been having maybe the worst time I’ve had.
I havnt made anything since.
I think I’m starting to see some light again, slowly getting into the workshop. Finding it a little easier to talk to and see people this last week or so.
I havnt felt like posting anything, but this small change I want to remember. I’m taking things cautiously. But trying hard to hold onto this gentle change.

I want to thank all you lovely people for all your support, know even if I’m very shit at responding it really means a lot.

For anyone else, please don’t give up.
